We prove two kinds of fibering theorems for maps X --> P, where X and P are Poincare spaces. The special case of P = S^1 yields a Poincare duality analogue of the fibering theorem of Browder and Levine.

The concept of $Diff^4$ invariant Poincare transformations is a cornerstone of T(opological) G(eometro)D(ynamics). This concept makes it possible to understand the concept of subjective time and irreversibelity as well as nontriviality of S-matrix at quantum level. In this paper the possibility of identifying $Diff^4$ invariant Poincare transformations as the recently discovered Lorentz invariant deformation of Poincare algebra with the basic property that 'new' energy is some function of 'old'...

We show a different modification of Poincare algebra that also preserves Lorentz algebra. The change begins with how boosts affect spacetime in a way similar to how they affect the momenta in kappa Poincare algebra, hence the term "dual kappa Poincare algebra". Since by construction the new spacetime commutes, it follows that the momenta co-commute. Proposing a spacetime co-algebra that is similar to the coproduct in the bicrossproduct basis of kappa Poincare algebra, we derive the...

We construct an obstruction theory for relative Hilbert schemes in the sense of Behrend-Fantechi and compute it explicitly for relative Hilbert schemes of divisors on smooth projective varieties. In the special case of curves on a surface V, our obstruction theory determines a virtual fundamental class $[[ \Hilb^m_V ]]$, which we use to define Poincare invariants (P^+_V,P^-_V): H^2(V,Z) --> \Lambda^* H^1(V,Z) x \Lambda^* H^1(V,Z). These maps are invariant under deformations, satisfy a...

Let M be a Poincare duality space of dimension at least four. In this paper we describe a complete obstruction to realizing the diagonal map M -> M x M by a Poincare embedding. The obstruction group depends only on the fundamental group and the parity of the dimension of M.

We present the action and transformation rules of Poincare supergravity coupled to chiral multiplets $(z^\alpha, \chi^\alpha, h^\alpha)$ with off-shell auxiliary fields. Starting from the geometric formulation of the superconformal theory with auxiliary fields, we derive the Poincare counterpart by gauge-fixing the Weyl and chiral symmetry and S-supersymmetry. We show how this transition is facilitated by retaining explicit target-space covariance. Our results form a convenient starting point...

We construct periodic families of Poincare complexes, partially solving a question of Hodgson that was posed in the proceedings of the 1982 Northwestern homotopy theory conference. We also construct infinite families of Poincare complexes whose top cell falls off after one suspension but which fail to embed in a sphere of codimension one. We give a homotopy theoretic description of the four-fold periodicity in knot cobordism.

We sample some Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt theorems appearing in mathematics. Along the way, we compare modern techniques used to establish such results, for example, the Composition-Diamond Lemma, Groebner basis theory, and the homological approaches of Braverman and Gaitsgory and of Polishchuk and Positselski. We discuss several contexts for PBW theorems and their applications, such as Drinfeld-Jimbo quantum groups, graded Hecke algebras, and symplectic reflection and related algebras.

An action for 3+1-dimensional supergravity genuinely invariant under the Poincare supergroup is proposed. The construction of the action is carried out considering a bosonic lagrangian invariant under both local Lorentz rotations and local Poincare translations as well as under diffeomorphism, and therefore the Poincare algebra closes off-shell. Since the lagrangian is invariant under the Poincare supergroup, the supersymmetry algebra closes off shell without the need of auxiliary fields.

We prove a Poincare lemma for a set of r smooth functions on a 2n-dimensional smooth manifold satisfying a commutation relation determined by r singular vector fields associated to a Cartan subalgebra of $\frak{sp}(2r,\mathbb R)$. This result has a natural interpretation in terms of the cohomology associated to the infinitesimal deformation of a completely integrable system.

In this article we define a Poincare series on a subspace of a complex analytic germ, induced by a multi-index filtration on the ambient space. We compute this Poincare series for subspaces defined by principal ideals. For plane curve singularities and nondegenerate singularities this Poincare series yields topological and geometric information. We compare this Poincare series with the one introduced in [E,G-Z]. In few cases they are equal and we show that the Poincare series we consider in...

The Lagrange-Poincare equations of classical mechanics are cast into a field theoretic context together with their associated constrained variational principle. An integrability/reconstruction condition is established that relates solutions of the original problem with those of the reduced problem. The Kelvin-Noether theorem is formulated in this context. Applications to the isoperimetric problem, the Skyrme model for meson interaction, metamorphosis image dynamics, and molecular strands...

A fully Poincare' covariant model is constructed out of the k-Minkowski spacetime. Covariance is implemented by a unitary representation of the Poincare' group, and thus complies with the original Wigner approach to quantum symmetries. This provides yet another example (besides the DFR model), where Poincare' covariance is realised a` la Wigner in the presence of two characteristic dimensionful parameters: the light speed and the Planck length. In other words, a Doubly Special Relativity (DSR)...

Suspensions of small anisotropic particles, termed 'rheoscopic fluids', are used for flow visualisation. By illuminating the fluid with light of three different colours, it is possible to determine Poincare indices for vector fields formed by the longest axis of the particles. Because this vector field is non-oriented, half-integer Poincare indices are possible, and are observed experimentally. An exact solution for the direction vector appears to preclude the existence of topological...

In the gauge theory of gravity based on the Poincare group (the semidirect product of the Lorentz group and the spacetime translations) the mass (energy-momentum) and the spin are treated on an equal footing as the sources of the gravitational field. The corresponding spacetime manifold carries the Riemann-Cartan geometric structure with the nontrivial curvature and torsion. We describe some aspects of the classical Poincare gauge theory of gravity. Namely, the Lagrange-Noether formalism is...

Motivated by decompositions of spaces that arise in continuous and discrete Morse theory, we describe a so called fibrous decomposition Z = X_0(Y_1)X_1 ... X_{n-1}(Y_n)X_n of a space Z. Among the applications is a succinct formula for the Euler-Poincare characteristic of Z, e(Z) = e(X_0) - e(Y_1) + e(X_1) - ... + e(X_{n-1}) - e(Y_n) + e(X_n) which exhibits the familiar sign pattern. A substantial part of the paper are examples demonstrating how the fibrous decomposition and consequently the...

Henri Poincare's work on mathematical features of the Lorentz transformations was an important precursor to the development of special relativity. In this paper I compare the approaches taken by Poincare and Einstein, aiming to come to an understanding of the philosophical ideas underlying their methods. In section (1) I assess Poincare's contribution, concluding that although he inspired much of the mathematical formalism of special relativity, he cannot be credited with an overall conceptual...
